Yuko’s first exposure to architectural lighting was a concept design she worked on during her senior year. Collaborating with a group of scenic and lighting design students, they designed a sculpture made in steel and light to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Since entering this new field, she has been passionate about bringing her theatrical approach into architectural works, and is grateful for the opportunity to learn about this different world of lighting design through assisting senior designers at HLD everyday. Born in Japan and raised in Southeast Asia, Yuko enjoys introducing parts of her multicultural background and knowledge into her work, and looks forward to opportunities to further diversify and expand these experiences in her professional career. This international retailer was melding the worlds of street, skate and fashion long before it was commonplace, tracing a line from product inception to a unique retail experience. The new Boston location’s challenge: a narrow 3-1/2 story footprint, landmark requirements & stringent energy codes. The design solution combines ethereal, thoughtfully integrated, striking lighting elements to mirror the brand’s bold identity, a standout amid neighboring high-end retailers. Beautifully navigating floor plan constraints, the 2-story entry space, luminously enhanced by LED backlighted ceiling clouds, creates a sense of spaciousness and daylight transition. The monumental stone staircase, reflective glass/zinc box and floating neon store logo provide a dominant visual element on all floors. A custom output, LED slot assembly pierces the top of the box; precisely designed to ensure even illuminance on the stairs while not overwhelming the upper-level floor. Energy code compliance is further aided by networked lighting controls with automated daylight dimming and the capacity to deeply dim ambient levels for special events, like DJ nights. Architect: Bergmeyer ------------------- About the IES Illumination Awards The IES Illumination Awards program recognizes individuals for professionalism, ingenuity, and originality in lighting design based on the individual merit of each entry. Judges are selected from a broad professional spectrum, representing knowledge of lighting and design excellence. The judging system is entirely based on how well the lighting design meets the program criteria. The Illumination Awards program is not a competition. About Hartranft Lighting Design
